Worship

Dahlonega UMC has great diversity in our worhsip services. We believe there is a place for everyone!

We have four main worship services that meet each weekend.  We also have "A Service of More" that meets the 1st and 3rd Sunday evenings.  Location: Each of the services meet in our Sanctuary.

Main Services: Typically Dr. Ross preaches all 4 of these services when he is in the midst of a series. 8 -12 weekends of the year we have special guests, other staff members, or music specials that share the preaching opportunites.

Communion: We celebrate communion monthly on the weekend of the 1st Sunday of the month.

Nursery: A nursery is provided at all but the Sunday 8:30 worship service.

Saturday 5:30pm   This is our newest service. Jeremy Noles is our worship leader. He brings a thoughtful, spiritual, contemplative, easy style to both Contemporary and Traditional Songs.  Typically, Jeremy is accompanied by a piano and a couple of friends on guitars. Angie Mayo and Jay Scovil are regular soloists.  If you would like to plug into the worship team email Jeremy at gnaworship@yahoo.com. Matt Tompkins and Suzanne Crossan help in the sound booth. The style of the service is conversational/casual. Because of the time of the service, there is more interaction than in the Sunday services.

Sunday 8:30am   An abbreviated traditional service. Hymns are sung out of the Methodist Hymnal. Joy Jones leads our hymns. Christy Greenwald and Janet Eriksson rotate as liturgists.  Typically we use the same creeds, prayers, hymns and liturgy as the 11:00 service. Generally the service runs until 9:10-9:15. Sunday School follows at 9:30, we have 5 adult classes to choose from. Henry and Kathy Davis help in the Sound Booth.

Sunday 9:30am  A contemporary service. Many of the songs we sing are the same ones you would hear on 91.5FM or 104.7FM.  Radford Windham leads the band that usually includes 4-5 musicians. Radford brings a ton of passion and expereince to the service. Typically we sing 5-6 songs as we worship together. Kerri Johnson begins the service with insight, inspiration and a focus on God's presence. Patrick Rauth coordinates all the activities in sound booth, if you are interested in helping in our booth either with sound or projection contact Patrick at prauth@gmail.com.  During the 9:30 service we offer our D'Town Kidz Church worship and sunday school for Junior and Senior High Youth. We have recently begun to offer adult Sunday school classes that begin at 10:45 for our 9:30 worshipers. Currently we have two classes.

Sunday 11:00am  A traditional service. The ministers and choir are robed. Typically the songs are out of the hymnal although we regularly add contemporary choruses to the mix. Lynn Lathem is our Choir Director and if you have an interest in the choir you can contact her at llathem@bellsouth.net.  Rev. Christy Greenwald serves as the liturgist, Helen Hardman is our organist and Jeffrey Herndon, pianist. Children participate in the 1st 10 minutes or so of the service and then head to Children's Church after Children's Sermon by the pastor.

Sunday Evenings: For those seeking a little extra worship and prayer time on Sunday evenings, we offer the following:

Service of More (1st & 3rd Sundays of the month, 6:30pm, Sanctuary)

Encounter of Worship (4th Sunday of the month, 6:30pm, Sanctuary) Encounter of Worship offers an atmosphere of continuous worship and prayer, where you can just come and spend time in the Lord's presence. Jeremy Noles and rotating teams of musicians lead us in worship, prayer and Scripture reading. This service is modeled after "Harp and Bowl" (inspired by Int'l House of Prayer). It's a time to gather and seek God's heart through music and His Word. Revelation 5:8 says, "Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints." The "harp" represents the music rising before the throne of God. The "bowl" represents our prayers rising like incense to God. Harp and Bowl is also an expression of our relationship with God. God speaks to us and moves our hearts. When we speak back to Him (through music, His Word, and prayer), His heart is moved. Healing Rooms is also open during this service.

They are able to stay for up to two years as they get their financing in place and complete needed education and job training.  To find out more about Action Ministries our the Transitional Housing program go to: http://transitional.actionministries.net/

Camp Glisson -- The youth retreat facility for the North Georgia Conference. We help with volunteer phttp://transitional.actionministries.net/rojects throughout the year. Glisson's web site is:  www.campglisson.org

Jail Ministry - Dahlonega UMC along with several other area churches participates in a women’s jail ministry. We go into the women’s pod at the Lumpkin County Detention Center every Tuesday evening. We have Scripture-based Bible lessons, singing, prayers and lots of hugs for any of the women who would like to participate. We give out easy-to-read-and-understand Bibles that are written especially for individuals who are incarcerated. We talk about God’s plan for their lives “to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). Mostly, though, we share the love of Jesus with them and the joy of living in His Word. Please pray for people who are incarcerated and their families.

Transition Ministry -- We reach out to men and women released from jail and prison, as well as individuals who have come through crisis and need help taking their next steps to a new life in the community. We work closely with the inter-church Jail Ministry team that visits the jail every Tuesday night, as well as the Sheriff's Office, which encourages individuals to contact our ministry upon their release. Our volunteer mentors meet one-on-one with individuals for an hour every week. Mentors are there to listen, encourage, pray with, educate on community resources, and help each person make a plan for their next steps. Individuals come to church with their mentors and are encouraged to participate in Celebrate Recovery, where they make new friends in a supportive environment. They also receive Prayer Ministry. Mentors also find out about speciifc needs the Body of Christ can meet. For more information, visit www.newnewlife.org

Dahlonega UMC is a part of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.  A significant part of our annual mission giving goes to our Conference Apportionments: A tithe ( about 10% of our budget ) goes to help with mission and service projects around the united methodist church. Some of the money goes to local projects like our transition house and the Wesley Foundation - college ministry. Other monies flow to schools, orphanages, elderly homes, missionaries, disaster relief as well as helping with conference and national administrative costs.  For more information about the North Georgia Conference, see their web page at  www.ngumc.org

Foreign Missions:

El Salvador -- For the last 7 years we have taken at least one annual trip to Santa Anna to work with the Oasis of Grace Church.  We are helping them equip leaders, minister to children, and share the gospel. We have helped with construction projects and built amazing relationships.  If you would like more info or are interested in being a part of the next trip, contact Chris Gillhouse - (cgilhouse@whbass.com)  for more info or if you are interested in serving on the next team

Guatemala -- Every year, we send a team to Guatemala to serve with Hearts for the Children Ministry. The team brings medical care and Vacation Bible School to rural villages; serves with the Mary Magdelene House street ministry in Guatemala City; offers care and ministry at the City Dump, where an entire community lives; helps with meal programs and construction and worship services at the Mission Church; and leads the weekly Children's program at the Church. Contact Art Fowler for more info.

Children

Kidz Church at 9:30 am

We begin our time in our small group classes: Preschool (must be 3 by Sept. 1), K & 1st, 2nd & 3rd, and 4th & 5th. Then we come into the sanctuary for large group worship where we hear the Bible story through skits and sing praise songs with our band. The last half of time is spent in the classroom where we do fun activities. We currently are using the 252 Basics curriculum where we focus on a different virtue each month.

Sunday School at 11:00 am

At 11:00 am on Sunday mornings we have Sunday school for kids ages 3-5th grade.  We begin our time in the 11:00 service then leave after the children’s lesson and come back for a Sunday school lesson.  We are currently using the Live B.I.G. curriculum.

Nursery at 9:30 am and 11:00 am

A nursery is provided for infants-2-year olds at the 9:30 and 11:00 am services.  Our nurseries are located on the bottom floor in the Park Street building (on the MMO hall).  At the 9:30 service we split the kids (infant, toddler and 2-year olds).  The 2-year olds have a Sunday school class during the 9:30 service where they learn a Bible story along with a craft, game, snack, or other project.  Your child is loved and well taken care of so you can enjoy one of our worship services.

Opportunities for growth and learning are given to each child through play and a variety of activities. Children learn to trust and respect others and themselves, and understand the love of Jesus Christ. We believe a child's early school experience should be one full of fun, love, and nurturing.
